Restoring benefits of abroad experience

(...) Universities say that exchanges give students intercultural  communication skills that equip them to study and work overseas.

Employers say students who study overseas show business traits such as motivation and initiative. (...)

Ms Daly, a lecturer in human resources management at the University of Tasmania, said universities wanted students to study overseas. (...)

Tom Campbell, a professorial fellow at the multi-campus centre for Applied Philosophy and Public Ethics, said the exchanges would develop students’ horizons and confidence, and give them a chance to study in areas that they could not in Australia.

The chief executive of the Australian Association of Graduate Employers, Ben Reeves, said students who went overseas showed initiative and the ability to adapt to unusual situations.

“When you’re screening candidates you get so much from marks and grades, but [student exchange] is more about the development of other skills,” he said.

“It tells more about your motivations and what you’re interested in and whether you’re flexible.”
