AIM Overseas takes off
In highschool, Rob Malicki wanted to do an overseas exchange, but the costs were prohibitive. His opportunity came as a Macquarie student with the help of a travel grant, coinciding with a leaflet about exchanges in England. Off he went on a life-changing experience (and an opportunity to follow Pearl Jam around Europe).
When he returned, the soaring outbound mobility numbers at Macquarie provided him with “the obvious career choice”.

The number of Australians studying overseas is on the rise, and many are seeking places and courses that will look impressive on their resume. 
A study by the Queensland Government has found that not only is it beneficial for a graduate to have overseas experience, but getting that experience will become more and more crucial for ambitious students in years to come.

International Study Experience as part of an Australian university qualification
One of the major themes for the Review Panel is how Australia can develop ‘a diverse, globally focused and competitive higher education sector’ (Appendix A, p. 76). The Discussion Paper makes references in a number of places to the outbound mobility of Australian students on international study experiences.

Peace Scholarships victim of efficiency measures
The Chair of IDP Education Australia Professor Ian Young has written to all Australian Universities advising them that its successful Peace Scholarship program has been terminated. Since it was established in 2004, more than 300 students from 13 countries came to study in Australia under the program.

Transforming Australia’s Higher Education System
The Bradley Review highlighted the benefits, to students personally and the wider community, of Australian students having the opportunity to do some of their study overseas. Overseas study can provide students with valuable language skills and cultural understanding and help them to develop personal networks that will benefit them as members of the global workforce.
OS-Help loans provide cash payments to eligible undergraduate Commonwealth supported students to assist them to undertake this life-changing opportunity as part of the study towards their Australian higher education qualification overseas.
The Government will remove the loan fee for new OS-Help loans from 1 January 2010.

In for the long haul
Marine Hautemont is the director of the Australian Institute for Mobility Overseas, which organises international exchanges for Australian university students. She takes at least six international and 20 domestic business trips a year.
