Frequently Asked Questions

Can I receive credit for my overseas intensive course?

All our programs are designed to count for credit as electives. However, it is up to your university to decide whether they will approve some credit for your participation in one of our programs. Normally it is a course convenor, Head of Department or Program Convenor who approves your credit. For them to be able to make a decision, you will have to provide them with a copy of the course syllabus, which you will find included in your acceptance pack.

Course convenors will not approve credit for a course unless you have a copy of the syllabus, so you should not visit your course convenor until you have received an acceptance from AIM Overseas.

How do I fund my overseas studies?

  1. Eligible students are able to effectively put the cost of the course on HECS. This works by students being eligible, applying and being accepted to receive OS-HELP from their home university.

  2. OS-HELP is paid directly to students, not to AIM Overseas. If you are eligible for OS-HELP you will receive the funding directly and can then use that to pay your course fees.

  3. Please note: final payment deadlines are fixed and all payments must be received by that date (you will be advised of this date in your acceptance letter). In some cases, students may not have received their OS-HELP loans by the final payment deadline - if this arises you will need to pay your final program fee from another source (i.e. your own savings, a loan, or with help from relatives etc) whilst you await your OS-HELP to arrive. No extensions are possible.

  4. You might be eligible for a $5824 OS-HELP loan from the Australian Government, if:

  5. Bulletyou’re an undergraduate student with 1 year of study behind you by the time you go on our program and have at least 1 semester left to complete after you return from our program, and

  6. Bulletthe AIM Overseas program you’re taking part in is counting for credit towards your degree

  7. BulletOther conditions also apply - see the OS-HELP website and also check with your university to see if they have other requirements that they expect you to meet.

  8. Go the OS-HELP website for more details and all up-to-date information.

  9. The application process, and amount of OS-HELP that students can take, varies from university to university. Most, but not all, universities allow students to take a full OS-HELP loan for their short program - a few universities will only let students take a partial amount for their short course. AIM Overseas will provide you some information about how this works and what it means once you have applied. You should not only look at the OS-HELP website, but also check out your university’s OS-HELP policy - by law this will be published on your university’s website.

  10. Travel Grants

  11. Depending on your university, some students may be eligible for a study or travel grant from their university. Where we are aware of grants offered by your university we will let you know once you have applied for a program.

  12. To find out whether or not any grants are available, we would recommend that you do some research and get in touch with your International Office, your faculty and any university leadership programs. If you have any other questions get in contact with us and we’d be happy to offer our assistance.

  13. How can I apply for credit and funding?

  14. If you apply for a program and you are accepted, we will give you detailed information on how to apply for credit and funding. AIM Overseas will also support you with this stage of the application process if you have any difficulties.

  15. Can I get a copy of the program syllabus/schedule?

  16. You will be provided with a copy of the program syllabus once you are accepted into the program. Wherever possible, the program schedule will be made available to accepted and fully paid students prior to the start of the program.

  17. How much will the credit be worth?

  18. Courses are designed to count as equivalent to one full-time, semester-long course at an Australian university. However, whether or not you will be able to get credit for the program and exactly how many credit points it will be worth depends on your individual university and your degree. Once you are accepted into the program, AIM Overseas will support you with this stage of the process.

  19. I don’t speak any foreign languages – will I be able to cope with the program?

  20. YES! All our programs are taught entirely in English (except the language programs, of course!)

  21. How much money will I need altogether?

  22. The answer to this question really varies from person to person. To get a better idea of how much spending money you might need, we can put you in touch with a previously returned student.

  23. Program costs are listed on our website. These costs will always include all tuition fees and accommodation. Depending on the specific programs, some cultural activities and meals may be included as well. Most or all of these costs can be covered by Government funding (if you are eligible).

  24. The following are not included in your program fees: airfares, travel insurance, other personal expenses.

  25. What if I’ve never travelled overseas before?

  26. That’s absolutely fine! A lot of students on AIM Overseas programs are first-time travellers, and with good reason: studying overseas is a safe and easy way for you to get a taste of international travel.

  28. Assistance in applying for credit/funding

  31. Support after you’ve returned from the program.

  32. Leading up to the program, we will put you in touch with other Australian students who will be doing the course so you can get to know each other, meet up, and maybe make travel plans together.

  33. Will AIM Overseas assist me with booking flights and travel insurance?

  34. We are not a travel agency so we cannot help you book flights and buy travel insurance. However, we have information about booking flights and travel insurance on our blog. Also, all the staff members at AIM Overseas are seasoned travellers and would be happy to share advice and tips.

  35. I have more questions… what should I do?
